Ferry Sinking in Philippines Claims 62 Lives

(MENAFN) The death count from a passenger ferry disaster in the Philippines has climbed to 62 after authorities recovered four additional bodies during the ongoing rescue and recovery mission, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Tuesday.

“With this development, the total number of fatalities has increased to 62, with 293 survivors, while 17 individuals remain missing,” the PCG stated in a notice shared on the US-based social media platform Facebook late Tuesday.

The M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 was traveling toward Jolo Island in Sulu province when it capsized near the waters surrounding Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan province.

Authorities noted that the ship sent out a distress alert at approximately 1:50 a.m. (1750 GMT) on Jan. 25, roughly four hours after leaving the Port of Zamboanga in Mindanao.

The Philippines, an archipelago consisting of over 7,000 islands, has a longstanding record of fatal ferry incidents, frequently attributed to overcrowded vessels and lax enforcement of maritime safety protocols.
